All About Bowling

A relatively simple activity, bowling has been around for centuries. There are several major tournaments in different countries with awards- making this a very legitimate sport. Bowling is also part of the Olympic games. With several different variations of the game, bowling is entertaining when performed for fun, competition, or for its physical benefits.

Bowling sets and equipment has been discovered as artefacts in ancient Egyptian digs, indicating that it has existed for a very long time. It was not until the late 1800s, however, that bowling became professionalized with rules and standards. Ten, nine, and five pins have all been used, of differing shapes and sizes as different bowling styles have evolved over the years. The most common type of bowling takes place in an alley-like setting with ten pins, taking after the old European game of Skittles.

The average American bowler is used to a ten pin setup, in which ten pins with wide bases and narrow necks are set up at the end of a long alley with “gutters“ on each side in case the ball goes off track. The alley is waxed for smooth, effortless playing as a heavy ball is grasped and thrown to roll down the alley. Bowling balls have finger holes for easier grasping, and come in varying weights depending on the player’s strength.

Each game of bowling will include several players, with equal manpower on each team. This makes the game perfect for large parties and get-togethers. The game is divided up into ten frames, as each player gets two chances per frame in an attempt to knock down all of the pins. Scoring is determined by the amount of pins eliminated per turn; when all of the pins are knocked down, this is called a strike and is worth ten points. If none of the pins are knocked down, this is called a spare and worth zero points. If the ball veers off of the alley into the gutter, it is called a gutter ball and is not worth any points, but still counts as a turn.

Joining a bowling team can be a great way to relax and have fun, as well as earn trophies. It’s also an excellent way to lose weight and keep fit as well, as bowling requires strength, stretching, and stamina. Bowling is a fun sport enjoyed by people of all ages all over the globe.
